  • These last few weeks with Red and Faith, and an injury

    A little about my horses:
    I have 2 horses:

Red: a 4 yr old grade(maybe gaited) sorrel, 15-15.1hh (just cut) gelding. He doesn't have much formal training, but he accepts a saddle well, though he needs work in the reining department, and with stopping. He's a true symbol of the green horse, except for his bombproofness(except when it comes to mares(his weak spot), which we hope will leave him in a few weeks or months) Seriously, though, he's a very quite guy and for a green horse, not much phases him. He's got quite a personality, too.

Faith: Faith is really "my" horse, though i own both of them. However, I am training Red for my dad, and I think that it's important for Red to bond with him a little bit more. Me and Faith are a match made in heaven IMO. She's an awesome horse, and is very sweet for a mare(you have to know my past w/ mares). She's also 4 years old, a bay w/ black points, about 14.3hh, and she is a registered QH out of a grandson of Colenel Freckles, and a G-Granddaughter of KingP234. She's got some really good cutting lines and I believe she will do great with reined cow classes in the "Far" future. For now, both horses are being trained to be good trail horses, and then fun horses for play-days, though I plan to go farther with Faith in the AQHA world with cow classes. She has a heck of a lot of cow sense and I don't want to waste it.  Right now, we are focusing on the AQHA riding log program.

So, what's been going on these last few weeks since aquiring Red and Faith, Hmm....let's see:

These past few weeks, Faith and I have been doing a lot of work bareback, and she's been responding great in her new hackamore, as well as some quick work w/ a halter and leadrope. I'm also proud of myself b/c now I can also ride the walk and the jog(slow and fast) bareback, which is a big accomplishment for me. THe lope will come with time, but I can see myself improving which is very important. I'm trying to improve my seat, b/c the saddle my father and I share(hopefully not for too much longer) is too big for me.

Let's see, Red got his third ride(with us anyway) Sunday, and I let my dad tack him up and get on him. Red did fine, and so did my dad, though their were some aids I had to help him on. But, letting my dad tack up also came to some problems. My dad got on the saddle fine, but when I went to spring up their, I found out really quick that he didn'y tighten the cinch enough(I should have checked, I know(the problem is, Red's smaller girth hasn't come in yet)) as The saddle flipped under red, and instead of landing gracefully, I fell backwards on to my ankle. Red just laughed at me, and by the end I was laughing, too. I knew it could have been worse. Now, due to dr's orders, I can't ride(even bareback) for two weeks due to a sprained ankle) which is really frustrating. Though, it gives me time to get alot of groundwork done, so I guess some good will come out of everything.

Well, the horses are calling, so Happy Trails until next time.
