I
have kinda written this post for my blog friend, Denise. who was
missing her dog, Spooky, the other day and to anyone else who misses a
companion they have had to leave in the past be it dogs, kitties, or
horses. Winter seems to be the time of year I brood about such things.
"Because
God is never cruel, there is a reason for all things. We must know the
pain of loss; because if we never knew it, we would have no compassion
for others, and we would become monsters of self-regard, creatures of
unalloyed self-interest. The terrible pain of loss teaches humility to
our prideful kind, has the power to soften uncaring hearts, to make a
better person of a good one."
-Dean Koontz

"Dogs'
lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the
pain is coming, you're going to anguish, so you live fully in the
moment with them, never fail to share their joy or delight in their
innocence, because you can't support the illusion that a dog can be
your lifelong companion. There's such beauty in the hard honesty of
that, in accepting and giving love while always aware it comes with an
unbearable price." -Dean Koontz
"Maybe
loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow
ourselves and for the mistakes we make because of those illusions."
-Dean Koontz

The
follow quotes were taken from Dean Koontz - The Darkest Evening of the
Year - which I highly recommend to everyone in our little blog group.
It's suspenseful and there is some violence, don't forget who the
author is, but it is a really really good dog book.
I have a
book review blog coming up when the snow flies up here, and I will go
into more detail about this book and a couple of others. But if you
guys want a good winter read - there it is. Click on Dean's name above
for a link to the book.
