I was wondering how many people on this site are over 50 and still loving horses? You don't have to own one to be a part of this thread. Sometimes, I feel like I am alone in this favorite pastime. I am 61 but don't feel it at all.

There are quite a few of us on this board, still enjoying our horses and/or being around horses. I volunteer at a therapy stable that has many over 50 y/o volunteers who still love to be around the horses. DH also rides and our two horses reside in our backyard.

Count me in! 7 horses. Started reining when I was 49 and that was several years ago. Age is a state of mind.

I was at a clinic 2 years ago with a 90 year lady that could almost outride us all. I want to be like her when I grow up!

At the stables where I board in the winter there are 3 ladies and 1 man well over 50! Everyone rides, some show, and all love every minute spent with their horses! Age is a frame of mind.

I think you might find that this thread will get quite long - there are quite a few 50+ on this board

I'm also 61 and immensely enjoying my horsey life - off to a dressage show tomorrow - I might make a fool of myself but as long as I have fun doing it, I OK

Me too! Me too! Didn't start riding or owning until mid-40s and it was well worth the wait. Lost my soul mate (four legged)lol 4 years ago, just now starting to ride again after an amazing time of rescuing 7 other beasties. What fun! I know many who are 50+, some have been doing it all their lives, some are just starting. It comes from the heart, where age has no meaning.

I'm not in that age set, but I have several clients that are. They generally ride Gaited horses or just do trail riding now. There are a few that are still hard at it, and wear me out just thinking about keeping up!

I just had to join EquiSearch when I saw this thread. You go girl, there are a lot of us over 50's still riding with no plans to stop. My best friend and I have decided we may have to ride Shetland ponies, but we will still be riding.

I'm just 50 so I think I count. Although I had ridden some as a youngster I didn't re-start riding till 7 years ago, and got my first horse (and love of my life) 6 years ago.

Im 17 so no,

BUt the lady I bought my new horse off is 72 and still riding, and has only just retired from breeding and showing,

I also know a couple that still show, break and ride horses and they are well into their 70's

I'm also 60. Bought my first horse 4 years ago. I fell in love with a 3 year old Morgan at a meat auction and the rest is history (and a couple of falls). I'd like to get involved in showing... have even dreamt about eventing.

I'm 56 and have been breeding, showing, and raising horses since I was 15 had cattle since I was 12. I'm sorta semi retired now so only have about 30 horses and 50 head of cattle but its enough to keep me as busy as I feel like being.

Jan, you go with the eventing if that's your dream! At Rolex a few years ago there was a horse/rider combo that totalled somewhere just shy of 90 years. They finished the three days and weren't last. He was in his late 60s. Hope to see you there in a few years... let us know when you ride, we'll all come watch!

I am 60.

After much begging and carrying on, my very strict father finally threw me up on the work mare when I was two ---- hoping being up so high would scare the manure out of me and I'd be "horse quiet".

Dad had to pull me off that old mare kicking and screaming (it was well worth the spanking ) It's a wonder I didn't pull her mane out because I wasn't letting go.

Started riding bareback behind my older cousin when I was 10 (we didn't walk or trot much either

I was 12 when my 9 yo cousin and I Started breaking my Grandpap's ponies to ride and drive.

Got my first horse at age 12, she had a foal that I kept until he was 29 (I was 42) and I had to put him down with cancer.

Went a year without a horse because I thought my world had ended. Realized that if I wanted to stay sane in this crazy world, I needed another horse and haven't been without one since.

They are a born-in-the-blood addiction and I will have at least one as long as I am physically capable of taking care of them. I still ride a lot, but it never has been as much about the riding as it has been about "seeing, touching and having them blow in my nose"
