Oh yes, a *Trace Clip* would work wonders! Do up the throat too. I didn't do Bri that way because I was using my little Stable Pro clippers, not real body clippers and I was just DONE! She was too. She's very, very ticklish on her belly, took much longer than anything else! LOL!!!!!! In hindsight, when I clip her again, I'll rent the big clippers, goes way faster that way.
Just remember to help keep the clippers sharp, the horse must be bathed, or at least spot washed and throughly dried to get as much dirt off as possible. Here in California, the Santa Ana winds come at just the right time to give your horse a bath and get her dried off enough to spend the night and then clipping her the next day. Using a product like Cowboy Magic spray helps too!

Re: The 50 plus gang/Winter Fat
Speaking of winter...has anyone noticed if their horse gains weight before the cold hits? Starlette is putting on some lbs even on the same diet all summer - even the same 1st cutting hay (I am still using up the last 8 bales from summer)...okay, one more flake of hay in the am because the pastures are going to sleep. I know part of it is that I am not riding quite as much, but not that much less. I was wondering if it was a combo of things...the grasses using less to grow, so she is getting extra from that, her being less active because of the shorter days, and a metabolism change (the same that causes her to grow coat). The last two years into winter when she was at a 2 flake a day/am/pm barn, she didn't gain weight, was trim, but when the cold hit she lost a lot of weight to the point of needing alfalfa hay and extra grain and really didn't look good until spring and it warmed up (and I got her on pasture at my house). I don't want to cut her hay back and she's only on 1/8 scoop of Nutrena Safe Choice, and 1/2 the amount of Grand Complete...Just wondering if anyone else noticed this or my gal is getting so much good food :) and not enough workout..

Re: The 50 plus gang/Winter Fat
Yes! Someone asked me the other day if she might be pregnant! In two weeks (we were gone) she has really changed... between the coat and the weight. She's still on pasture (no hay) with minimal grain to get her supplements. She is an easy keeper. The other two haven't done much about coat and their weight might be up a bit.

From another 50 year old. Not sure how many folks will be in Las Vegas for the NFR but
EquestrianSingles.com is hosting their 4th annual party on Dec 15th at Stoney's.
The majority of members are older, many in their 50's. Everyone is welcome to attend.
So far over 200 people have RSVP'd and it looks like more than half are in the age range
40-60. There is more information on the websites home page. I have gone every year and
made so many friends.

Jackie- I hear ya!! My mare is getting fat too. She is on free hay right now but has been most of the summer due the drought etc. and never looked this big. I have not exercised her much in the last ten days and need to do that starting tomorrow. That's one of the reasons why I might opt to bring her in at night starting in December.Thats being discussed on my other thread too.
Have a nice night,
PJ

I am over 50, just getting back into riding after an enforced 30 year absence!
My dad gave away my horse when I was in college [and didn't tell me] and I didn't have money for one until now.
I am now living my dream again. No more refusing to watch western shows cause it made me cry cause I didn't have my horse! No more avoidance of the those who I knew had horses, cause I could not talk about my loss!
Now I have laughter, sore muscles, the scent of manure on my boots, the thrill of watching my mare cantering in the pasture, the sound of her nickering to me when I arrive at the farm, and the satisfaction of forming building a bond with God's greatest creation. I am truly blessed.

Hello and welcome!
I can tell the selling of your horse was devastating.
Congratulations for reaching what was, I am sure, your life long goal of horse ownership again.
Pictures would be great if you care to share your best friend with us
They are a magnificent blessing aren't they?

Thank you!
It is true that having Lady Ashen is my dream come true, she is God's blessing to me. She is an 8 yr old Arabian mare and is as sweet, gentle, willful, and beautiful as they come.
Here is the best photo of her taken a year ago.

Aren't Arabians great horses????? I have owned several different breeds and rode many, many other horses, but my Arabian mare Briahna is just a treat! She has more personality, more moxie, more wanting to please than any of those other horses put together!
I was on vacation in Utah and my friend Nancy was tending Bri for me when I was gone. She had gotten her out of her stall to turn her out and then made her bucket of grain and supplements. As she was leading her back to her 24'X24' stall, Bri rushed her and pushed her up against the pole gate. Now when I make her bucket and take her back to her stall, I throw the lead rope over her neck, tell her "Go to your room, I'm right behind you!" and grab her tail and have her pull me, endurance style into her stall. Well, I guess she was just trying to get ahead of Nance, and pushed her into the gate. Well Nance yelled at her for doing so and poor Bri was so hurt she walked to the corner of her stall and put her head there and pouted!!! LOL!!!! Nance apologized for yelling at her and after two or three looks like, "Do you really mean it?", did she come to eat her bucket!!!!! She's a real hoot!
She's going to be 25 in February and I always think of her living to ripe old age, but when she does pass, I'll get another Arab. Just love the horse.

Hi there everyone!! It's another beautiful, crisp day here in Minnesota.I am going to make very effort to get out to the barn earlier today so I can exercise and ride by chubby horse. It gets dark so quick here and she sweats real easy so I have to allow time to walk before turning her out again. I have a question.???? Do any of you find that that the "younger" horse people exclude you or sometimes act that your not there?? Just wondering. It does happen to me on occasion but I deal with it.
LadyAshen and deserthorses5- I too came back to horses after 30 years of not involvement but trailriding at a hack stable once in awhile. My horse is the light of my life next to God and Hubby, of course.
Briahna's Mom- I love my half Arab that adopted over three years ago. She is so intelligent and has alot of spunk.I honestly don't think that I could handle a full blooded Arabian. She is now 10 years old and every minute that I am with her is a true blessing from God.
Happy trails folks!! PJ

Younger people on the bb's often seem to know everything, and if I often find if I post, I'm either ignored, or I get a snotty answer. I enjoy the boards, and I spend a lot of my time cruising this one and others. Coth and Mane Street seem to be the most active, but seem very clique-y. There are a lot of informative discussions to follow though.
It's very enjoyable to me to read postings from people in my age range, and the incredible variety of experiences. I have been fortunate to have horses in my life and work as a pro all this time, I don't think I would have stayed sane trying to live without horses. Or more likely I'm not sane at all, and don't give a d......
