Need to put weight on Briahna, but she has Cushing's...

My 24 year old Arabian mare Briahna was recently diagnosed with Cushing's disease.  She has been on Pergolide for almost 3 months now, but really lost weight this summer.  The vet says that is nature's way of keeping the horse cooler, without so much fat.  The vet didn't want me to change her feed (grass hay in am, alfalfa at noon and grass hay for pm, with Integrity Lite grain mix, Grand Complete suppliments).  She suggested adding rice bran or rice bran oil, one cup a day with her grain/carrots bucket, two cups if she doesn't respond well.  I bought some rice bran oil, but it is expensive, $22 a gallon.  I'll use it up but I'm wondering if anyone else has faced the same problem and solved it and can share their wisdom.  Remember, Bri has Cushing's so my choices are limited.

    Hi There,

My thoroughbred mare is 26 and she has cushings and is on pergolide too.  What my horse gets is a scoop of rebound, scoop of this green color grain type food..i forget what its called..then she gets a small scoop(one of those ice tea size scoops)of fat cat sprinkled on the food, and her meds sprinkled on top of that.  Then she gets a squirt of vegitable oil on her food.    She gets that around lunch time.     Then at breakfast time and dinner time she gets her normal grain and hay. Im not sure what kind of hay it is.  I don't do the am & pm feedings.  I just do the lunch time feedings when im at the barn. Other times my trainer would do it on the days im not there.

A few months ago,i gave her Vintage Senior,by Blue Seal feeds. But that bag is long gone. It seemed to help a bit.  I don't know if we are going to get another bag or not.

This food has helped her to much.  You can't see her ribs as much.. she has a whole new coat too. She looks sooo good for her age. Smile

I don't know if that helped you with anything..but thats what i do for my horse.

Hey thanks for the info.  Looks like the Rebound is for electrolytes, don't know what the green stuff is either but I'm interested in the Fat Cat.  I'll have to find some and give it a try.  So you just use regular vegetable oil?  Like Wesson oil?  Let me know.  I've asked around my stable and most people use either corn oil or soybean oil.

     Thanks again!

P.S...If that's your mare in your pics, she does look fantastic for 26!  Keep on doing what you are doing!Big Smile
