    Looking for a name....?

I am fairly new to the horse world as we have had our horses only since May '07, we have purchased a small piece of property (6.5 acres) which is zoned "estate, mini-farm".  We will be begin building there this year and I really want to call our place something.  Not just an address where Don and Leisa live, you know?  I want to give our little mini-farm a name.  Does anyone else have a small place and you gave it a "farm" name?  (my husband feels named homesteads are for large acreage and land)  Smile

Our farm may seem big compared to yours - we have 70 acres - but it is a very small acreage in this community of 500 to 1000 acre working farms.

But this IS our 'estate', our 'mini-farm' , our 'homestead',  and we gave it a name ....CedarLane Farm - named after the beautiful stand of cedars down by our pond & the tranquil lane that beckons us to walk through our wee corner of paradise Smile

BTW - I've seen 50 foot properties  with handsomely carved signposts at the gate welcoming all to the proud owner's tiny homestead Wink

We have 2.5 acres. To me, it's tiny compared to the huge farms of my birthplace, Pennsylvania, but we love it anyway! We named it "Brass Ring Ranch". It got its name one evening at dinner. Hubby and I were talking about how amazed we were with the fact that we had sold our house in town and managed to get "land". I said it was like finally getting the brass ring on a carousel, and our ranch name was born! After 4 years, I still sometimes stand out back and say to myself, "I can't believe this is ours!"

Anyway, I definately think any horse property is worth naming, because it's something we horse lovers dream of our entire lives. It's an accomplishment and something to be proud of, whether a modest place like ours or a fancy place. I think it makes it more special to you and gives you a sense of connection to it.

I don't feel size matters for a name! :) I have just a little peice of land for now (with plans to get much more in the near future), but I had a name picked out before I even owned horse property ;)

Ours is CheyAut Ranch, named after my horsey soul mate, my first horse, whom I still have. Cheyenne Autumn. Give it some though, pick a name that has meaning to you. Some name their place after something/one special, as I did, others name it after the location or look of the place.

    Greeting from "Freedom Rose Farms"!

who started in a college dorm room about 10ft x 15ft and 10 years later, now owns/rents/borrows around 200 acres total (not all in one place) and the equipment used. (and the name has never had to change)

I don't LIKE working with unamed farms....so I alway say NAME IT! but that's me and I'm nuts

    Re: Looking for a name....?

Oh, I like that "Freedom Rose Farms".  That is a great name.   Maybe someone can help me figure out a name.  You guys are all too good at this.  Here is a little info about  us and if you have suggestions, I would like to hear them.

My husband is a retired steelworker (but only 57 yrs. old) He builds all our homes..very handy guy. He has this signature grey hair and grey beard.  I have been a jazzercise instructor for over 20 years. (the big '50' is this year) We just started riding last year and can't get enough.  I can be having the worst day and go to spend a couple hours w/the horses and it just makes the sun shine, you know?  I can't read enough or hear enough and I am ticked I can't get rfd.television in my area.  Everyone we know (that doesn't have a horse) thinks we have lost our minds.  We built our third and last (we thought) new home 2 yrs. ago.  Planned to remain here forever then we found the horses.  Well we are building again on 6.5 acres to have room for the horses.  I can't wait!  I don't care what kind of house I have, just so we have plenty of pasture and a barn for the horses!   (sorry that was so long)

    Maybe someone has some ideas...

We have two cats and two horses.. My baby, 7 yr. old Red-lined Dun mare named "Cookie"  (named after her rather large backside and yes, she does love cookies)  (17 yr. old Tennessee Walker, Sorrel gelding.  He is very sweet but is the king of the pasture (w/8-9 other horses)..

    lol....

well if this is you LAST home.... then something like

"Home At Last_________"  Farm, Stable, or Barn, etc

You'll know your name when it finds you.

Something that feels nice on the tongue, doesn't take more than on breath to say.

Also if your going to do a 'sign' which is alway nice for visitors, try to find something that LOOKS nice to the eye

We shorten to FRF but my brand has the second F turned around and the R sits on the 'fence' formed by the Fs...I hope to someday make the R more 'rosey'

Well, playing with the D from Don & the L from Leisa, I came up with -

    D-Lightful Farm

(which sure seems what your place will be!!)

Wow, how fun for you!  I, too, finally got my little farm (5 acres) and YES, it does have a name:  Moon Rising Farm

Named for our first mare Ebony Crescent Moon, and the fact that the moon rises beautifully over the mounatain in our front yard.

since this is your dream, how about:  Dreamtime Farm, or for a little fun:  Sweet Spot Farm

Play around with how you feel about your new place and you will find the right name.  congratulations!

    Re: Looking for a name....?

I don't think you have to have a large homestead to have a name for your piece of the world. There is another thread about this in General Discussion that you may want to check out. We only have eight acres and we have named our place Lazy K Acres. My sister and her husband have 10 acres and they have also named their place Worlwind Farms (their last name is Worly). It is your place so why shouldn't it have a name. Even if it is just what the family calls it. I know someone who had just 2 acres and called their place WannaB Farms.

    Anyway good luck
