Going to copy/paste from marestare thread...
So while I waited for the vet, I figured I had better try to catch Miss Cocoa. I went in with a small pallet in front of me in case she kicked. But she let me scratch her neck (she LOVES that), and eventually I was able to slip a lead rope around her neck. Once I did that, I was able to halter her. Once I did that, she was GOOD! Baby was laying down napping. Cocoa wanted out of the stall! So I let her wander around with me a bit, she kept going back to check on baby. Then baby came out! She is a curious little girl, walks right up to me!
And Cocoa let me pet baby!!!! Then baby went to lay down, and the ground was wet (I had dumped/cleaned out water buckets) so I took them back in.
When vet got here (yay, it was my regular vet!) I held Cocoa with her butt in the corner. She wasn't happy about strangers messing with her precious baby girl, but she eventually settled down.
Baby has a bad ulcer on her right eye
Her left eye is also a little cloudy, but no ulcer there. She has entropion going on (eyelids turned in against eye), and Dr says that isn't uncommon and will straighten out by 3-5 days old. She injected penicillin, which turns the eyelids out for now. I have three different eye ointments. I know one is twice a day, one is either once or twice a day (thank goodness they're written down!) and the other is EVERY TWO HOURS!!! So much for sleep!
WIll have to leave work at least once, if not twice to come home and do her eyes, as well. Vet says she knows it's not going to be every two hours b/c of work, but to do the best I can. If Cocoa settles down more, Craig might be able to do it, but as of now, I highly doubt Cocoa will let him in there without me.
Then when they were done, I let Cocoa go, and she was sooooo worried. And THEN they decided to check filly's temp, so I had to recatch Cocoa, and she was NOT happy and BARELY missed kicking me good!
I was int he back of the stall, had to hop the fence, go to the front, and come in with the pallet again. Finally got her, and baby's temp is fine.
I'm to call Dr tomarrow, and she's coming back on Monday to check filly's eyes. I also asked her about the cough going through the horses, she said it's likely a virus, and it will just have to work it's way through the barn and out
but not to worry about it.
So, that's what's up. You will see me in there with the pallet, then we will prob take Cocoa out and tie her right in front of the stall while we work on baby's eyes for safety to us.
