Hmm. The stallion is registered as a chestnut. Here is a picture of one of the foals.

She almost looks like a brown now that I look at the pictures.

Looks like a bay to me.

Re: Pictures of the "chestnut" stallion.

He is DEFINITELY a bay.  Registration papers can be incorrect (which is not a good thing but it happens); I'm surprised they are THAT incorrect.  It could be that they sent in the registration papers really early when he still had "baby fuzz" on his legs which may have hidden the black.  Still it's a pretty big error...

Anyway chestnuts will never have black legs or black "points" (mane, tail, ear lining, etc).  They can be a really dark brown and less red (liver chestnuts, etc), but not black.  This horse has all the classic agouti (bay) markings and even has a darker tone to his barrel (dark bay).  He definitely has one black gene (and since one of his foals was a chestnut we know he only has one black gene and one chestnut gene (is heterozygous black)).

If I'm reading correctly this is one of her foals, not the stallion.

    Turn-'n-burn:

If this is in reply to me I am well aware that this foal is not out of the bay "chestnut" stallion.  However, while we were discussing genetics a list of her mare's previous foals was given and it contained a genetic impossibility (chestnut + pali = bay).  These are the pictures of that "chestnut" stallion that explain the genetic impossibility....the "chestnut" stallion is bay.  Has nothing to do with the current foal however.

If you are talking about the pictures of the bay horse I put up, I said that, that was the bay mare that supposedly can't be a bay. She is registered as a chestnut though for some reason.  I emailed the owner of the bay to see if she has ever seen the stallion. The pictures I have up are NOT of the "chestnut" stallion.

Yes, Liberty refers to the above horse as a "she", so I don't believe the above horse is the "chestnut" Stallion, I believe it's one of Honey's previous fillies.

Sorry if I'm reading this wrong.

Edit: It looks like Liberty beat me by 1 second to posting this! lol =)  Glad to know I'm not *that* crazy!

Sorry, I didn't read foal.  Yes, she's a bay.  No way the stud is chestnut if the mother was pali (maybe the mom was buckskin?  or was it your mare's foal?) you need a black gene from somewhere and black is dominant so you'd see it.

It's her mare's foal, the palo.

So, either stallion is registered incorrectly, or there was some fence jumping going on... ;)

Mystery solved. The woman who owns the bay mare above said that the stallion was "black or brown. He was black with a brown nose."
