That is such great news!  It's good to learn how to carry, etc. with a whip, and hopefully you won't need to use it for long.  Sounds like Blueberry has more respect for you now after such a great lesson.  I'm not surprised you were not as tired; you probably had a lot more fun, and less work, this time.  Even if it takes a few times of having to use the whip, Blueberry sounds smart enough to know he isn't going to get away with his silliness with you anymore.

Hopefully, I won't have to touch him again with the whip. I'll always have it, just in case. I've been practicing passing the whip from one hand to the other. I have my reins set up on a chair just so I can continue to practice this.  Then I'll have to ride my Kur routine while switching my whip.

The Bay is the horse I rode in August and September 2007. He was difficult too. He liked to stop and gawk. But after I figured out how to place my heel at just the right spot, he stopped his fooling around.  I was able with him to come in first place in the Kur, and on the Dressage test. I miss him. No body else did well on him. He developed an ulcer and is at a farm near Blacksburge Va.  He was the tallest horse I had ever ridden. He was such an unknown, that I was not given permission to use a whip.

    Blueberry is the other horse.

I was so thrilled that this lesson went so well. This weekend I have been practicing switching the whip from the whip hand to the whip-hand-to-be. I did have a better time in the lesson this time. I'm glad too, I need to get busy working on the routines for this show on the 24th.

Hopefully Blueberry won't do any more of his fooling around stuff.

Well, he may try a few more cute tricks, but if you keep letting him know it isn't pleasant for him, he'll figure out pretty quick it is easier for him to do what you want instead of messing around.  Sounds like you've got the bull by the horns this time!  Good luck!

I had to flick little Blueberry during today's lesson. Otherwise it was a good lesson. I have three more lessons to prepare for the show. Should be interesting. Won't be able to use Earth Dance with him so I got approval to use 'Reed My Lips" by Tom Scott for the Dressage Kur.

Good!  Sounds like things are going well.  You may need to flick Blueberry now and then but it sounds as if he is already doing a better job of listening to you!  Once you gain his respect and confidence, I'll bet you two will be a great team!

He is getting better, but I still have to touch him lightly with the whip. It's like he's so cute, or (he is sure he's so cute) he can't believe I'm using it. I'm going to ride him in a schooling show on Saturday in the Musical Freestyle. He was fine today in practice, mostly behaving, but he did require a tickle every now and then.

I understand......my Arab gelding is like that.  He thinks he is unbearably cute (which I have to admit, he is!) but he still needs to have gentle reminders now and then.  Sounds like you and Blueberry are doing great tho; keep up the needed tickles and he will finally realize you are in charge...not him!  Let us know how the Sat. show goes!  Good luck!

I went to the  Schooling show at the Virginia Horse Center on Saturday. My friend,  came to get me. I was happy that she could do that since I sure didn't get the right kind of sleep. Kept waking up. So I was thrilled she could come after me. For somebody with Fibromyalgia she has more umpth than I do.

I kept my riding junk to the least amount I could get away with carrying off to this show. I should have packed something more to eat. I took cheese with me. I was fairly wired on Ribose. Have to take a lot, to be able to leg a pigheaded little horse like Blueberry.

He did real well this time. I only had to tickle him one time with the whip. I was greatly surprised that he ignored all the piles of other horse's poop. Generally he would have to at least admire these piles. No opportunities from me for him to attempt something like that with my constant alternating leg pressure.

I think it was nearly dark when I rode him. The sun looked like it was on its way down over the Blue Ridge mountains. I rode him to the music from the CD by Tom Scott called Reed My Lips, the tune was actually called Reed My Lips, a jazzy sax number that fit this little horse. I had a snappy walk out of him despite him having to work from 3 pm until about 8 pm in other events. He has a lot of endurance for a 13 years old.

I had to give him some apples before I got on him otherwise he gets mad at me. He was so mad this time that he didn't get all of them before we rode that he cribbed the mounting block bringing off the edge of it. He doesn't crib, he was just mad that he didn't get all of those 3 apples all at once.

His "mother" was there acting as the groom. I had to appologize to her for what I said last year about Blueberry acting like a butthead when I rode him last May. I may have said how he liked to turn around every few feet to nudge my boot with his nose. I sure hated that. Bugged me a lot. She acted like she didn't remember what I said about him last year. I sure had to eat crow!

There was a family at this show with a bunch of Fox Terriers not on leashes. The Horse Center requires that dog owners leash their pets. These little maniacs ran down to the Dressage ring. So I'm fixen to do my first 10 meter circle which I screwed up because these little jerks came into the ring. So I got Blueberry out of the way, but managed to do a much larger circle which I got a lower score on the inflated 10 meter circle. I heard my instructor behind me tell me that I had a good correction on the dogs.  After the Freewalk, towards the end of the routine Blueberry stumbled once, or twice, so I know he was tired. I had a good balanced seat, so he didn't get off balance with me when he stumbled. It think I have been riding him barefooted for weeks. I don't think he has been shodd all month.

We had student judges for this schooling show, so I don't want to get down on myself too much over getting 3rd place on the Dressage Kur. But, I had a good ride on Blueberry. A lot of the adult riders sucked at their events too. So we could share our misery, I guess. None of us are used to messing up like this.

Thanks, I had a great ride, and couldn't be more proud of him for mostly behaving himself for the Kur. So despite my 3rd place win, I could see how well he responded to me. I know we can do better at each event we attempt.

Hey, Girl!  Put that dressage whip down a minute and quite beating yourself up.  I think you and Blueberry deserve big congrats!  What a day!  It sounds like you and Blueberry have come soooo faaaar lately!  I wish I could have watched you two.  Besides that, I love jazz big time!  Whoever brought those dang dogs shoulda been ran around the arena chased by horses....ha ha ha!  Talk about inconsiderate.....jeez!  I think you did great and dealt with what came your way really really well.  And I think Blueberry thinks so too!  Cheers to you!        Lynda

Another tip that helps is your own attitude to him, If you feel in any way insecure, or scared he will buck if you hit him with the crop, he will know. Also, think positive. Picture him moving for you. Be assertive in your attitude with him. Firm but fair.
