I have been helping set up the hunter ring for my local saddle club shows recently, so I only have that to go by...
That said, we simply have the bases of the front-rail and back-rail standards overlapping by a couple of inches. The "feet" of them that is (hopefully that makes sense). So the spread is only maybe a foot or so. The highest class offered at these shows is 3ft, and the 26 and 3ft jumpers and hunter classes show over them with no adjustment in the width of the oxer, so setting the oxer up this way should work for you, too.
And the width DOES vary depending on the height, so at the higher levels of jumping, the spreads are wider on oxers (and the set-ups for oxers start to get kinda cool, like a Swedish or a square oxer, and test your skills even more)
