    Quick questions

I've been riding Western for years and I just decided to try riding english. My horse knows how to ride both and I bought a bridle but I don't know what type of bit to use. In his western bridle I use a full cheek snaffle. Do I use the same bit??

Also, I bought a new gelding and he's a perfect gentleman at times but he just started to bite and when I try to discipline him he goes after me and tries to attack?? Any suggestions why he's doing this??

Keep the full cheek snaffle if you are happy with it.  Perfectly good english bit (actually more an english bit than western).

As for the biting it sounds like he's challenging you.  Major lack of respect and a very dangerous issue.  What do you do to discipline him when he bites?  When he attacks afterwards (what is he doing, coming at you with teeth barred? rearing and striking at you?)?  When does he normally do this (tied for grooming, outside, leading, when he's loose)?

You might want to consider having a trusted professional help you with this as they can read your horse (they are there) and can hopefully 1) discipline him enough if he does it to them which will lay good solid precedent for you disciplining him 2) show you how to effectively discipline him to nip this in the bud so it doesn't happen again.

    Re: Quick questions

When he attacks me he comes at me with his teeth barred. I have some experience with biting horses but I will most likely talk to a trainer to help me.

    Thanks

You can keep using the same bit and likeQHAllAround said, its more of an english bit than western although they are used in both.

Agree with the others on the bit - continue to use it if he is happy with it.

Sounds like you have a power struggle going on with the new horse - he is trying to put you at the end of the food chain - pushing into YOUR space is a no go - enlist an experienced trainer ,as coming at you with bared teeth is not like a horse trying it on with a quick nip - this guy means business and you could get quite badly hurt - this horse must have some issues - what did the previous owners tell you about him when you bought him - was this the reason he was sold? Has he been mistreated in the past - could be a long rehab process for you, good luck
