    Send your name to the moon

    Any closet space geeks out there?  You can send your name (or a friend's or your horse's) to the moon on a NASA spacecraft.  Free and you get a certificate to print as well.

    Send your name to the moon with LRO

    My boss is actually working on a companion mission to this called LCROSS.  The craft will share the same rocket and separate once in orbit.  LRO will continue to the moon to begin it's orbiting mission.  LCROSS will make some gravity assists and give LRO time to get settled and then crash into one of the lunar poles in search of water ice.  Space and ground based telescopes will be able to image the crater plume with high precision spectrometers and if you are lucky you may be able to catch a glimpse of it from Earth using only an amateur grade telescope.

    I got to go into the clean room to visit LCROSS this fall before it was shipped to JPL for final assembly!  Seen below, the spacecraft is to my left under the protective plastic (we were having earthquake issues at the time so even the clean room was getting dust particles floating around!!).

    If you are trying to imply that NASA is trying to form a junkmail list from this or is going to sell the names you are sorely mistaken.

    Wow, I envy you! I have always held a huge interest for 'that kind of stuff'. I am getting quite good with my cheap telescope, but I am saving up to buy a better one. That would be amazing getting to go into the clean room, being that close to the technology.

    Lucky you!  I'm not very good with a telescope.  I can get Mars and the Orion Nebula and that's about it, LOL.  Slowly getting better though.

    I did get to select targets for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.  I don't get to physically drive it yet, but pretty darn close for a satellite orbiting Mars.  Hopefully we'll have data back within the next 2-3months or so.  Just in time for me to start my next dissertation project! LOL.

    It's a lot of work, and unfortunately a lot of sitting at a desk, but I love my job!

    Can we nominate forum users to be *sent* to the moon...ya know...not just their names? I have one in mind....

    Only if I am at the top of the nominations and it's not a one way trip ;)

    I can think of a few names that might be better off on a one way trip to interstellar space however.  That would serve dual purpose; any malicious aliens would be too darn scarred to enter our solar system after such an encounter!  Who knows, they might even use bits to contain the poor mistreated gravity waves for their own selfish transportation purposes; then they'd really get an ear full.  Hope there are plenty of Babble Fish translators to go around!

     I'm confused -- what do they do, write it on a piece of paper and wave it around in the lunar "air?"  Haha,  nice one FHM!!  I bet it could.  Although, if I sent my name to the moon, would it be so far away that the crap mail folks couldn't find it anymore?

    They are recording the information (names) electronically on a chip (essentially a flash drive, but smaller) which will be fixed to the orbiter.  That's it.  It's just supposed to be fun and increase interest/support especially among the country's youth which are sadly becoming more and more apathetic about science/math/engineering in all forms.

    I think it's cool to have my name on a spacecraft orbiting the moon, even if it is just on a microchip, and I've gotten to decide where to "drive" the things!  Maybe I'm just odd though...

     That sounds really cool. My soon to be 7 year old loves space stuff. he learned the basics in kindergarten and that was it. he had to have a telescope, he loves to use that, and has pictures of the planets all in his room. His favorite is Saturn. How would you go about doing it?
