    Mac vs. PC (computers)

Alrighty, for a grad present my parents are getting me a laptop, they have pretty much told me to do the research and they'll go buy it. So... I personally have never had any experiance with Vista, but I have heard it is a pain with numerous unsolved problems. I also don't have any experiance with the Mac's, are they any good? What would you recommend, stick to a PC or get a Mac?

    Thanks:D

    Re: Mac vs. PC (computers)

What field are you planning on going into?  What are you planning to study?  That could play a key role in computer choice.

That said I will never go back to a windows operating system, period.  OS X (apple) has windows beat hands down in the operating system department.  Full of features (that I actually use!), intuitive, customizable, user friendly, adaptable and it never crashes on me!  Say good bye to "fatal error", "illegal operation", freezes, viruses, worms, etc.  I may move to Linux (for reasons I'll describe below), but not back to Microsoft!

Because people will want to know:  The new macs will boot windows (XP or Vista) and you have some options for doing this.  You can partition your harddrive and boot it alongside OS X, you can run windows and only windows (remove OS X), you can run windows inside OS X using a program called parallels that installs windows (fully operational) into a FOLDER on your desktop (run windows without it actually being a true "operating system" on your machine).  Macs will also boot Linux no problems and OS X is unix based, you can get straight into your unix platform from a program inside OS X (standard, but you have to tell it you want it to install).  Finally, Microsoft does make "Office Mac" which is powerpoint, word, excel, etc for an OS X operating system.  It is compatible back and forth with your friend's pc.  New mac software and even the open source software can now also save as microsoft compatible files and read the microsoft office files.  The compatibility issues are a thing of the past.

Aside from some internet games and an older version of this website I have no internet incompatibilities either (equisearch now runs fine for me, thanks guys ;) ).

Now the full disclosure:  If you do buy a Mac, DEFINITELY buy the 3yr extended warrantee.  It will likely pay for itself.  A bit about me and my mac (Hugh).  I bought a first run (bought it the week it was released, so first shipment out) macbook 2yrs ago.  I love it, but it does have it's quirks (most of which I blame on it being a "first run" and no-one else has had my quirky problem).  I had to replace my charger yesterday as it died (free with extended warrantee, no hassles, no questions asked.  I walked in and 10min later walked out with a new charger).  It will go back in hopefully next week as my case needs to be replaced (minor cracking), trackpad needs to be replaced (button no longer functions), and my hardware/software issues/quirks are escalating to the point I'm concerned (they will either re-install my operating system and reload ALL of my information or replace my hard drive and do the same, all free).

Most people I've talked to have used their extended warrantee for something, normally minor (charger, battery, case cracking) and it's paid for itself.  I haven't heard a single one of them complain about the way Apple handled it.  They are good to their Mac customers and stand behind their warrantees.

Basically, there may be some durability issues, at least with the laptops.  On the other hand mine travels EVERYWHERE with me (including at least 6 cross country plane flights), I commute with it daily in a backpack, took it to class with me for a year in all weather, and generally use it to its fullest potential for 10-15hrs a day, every day.  Two years later I'm asking them to replace external components from wear and do some preventative snooping around in the hardware section, not bad!

If you get a MacBook and not a MacBook Pro then plan on upgrading the RAM to two 1 GB memory.  It makes a world of difference in the speed.  Also the macbooks don't have the best built in speakers, macbook pros look like they might have better ones.

    Bottom line: Buy a Mac!

    Thanks for all the information!

I'm majoring in biology so I have a lot of bio/chem/math classes, but I am also taking a full english course and anthropology.

You are probably fine either way then.  Certain disciplines really favor one over the other, for instance: graphic design, graphics work, photographers=Macs but engineers (who need good solid CAD software)=PCs, Space Science division of NASA Ames well...we run mostly Macs for our number crunching satellite imagery goodness :)

I have a pc at home, but my school has macs. I like the mac better because they are easier, and have cool features. They have word and powerpoint, but you can easily make movies on them. They are really quick. They were the first coumputer, so the pc imatated them. I think that thepc arn't as good. I find every thing easier, and I can do things to the mac that I have no idea how to do on pc, and I have had a pc all my life!!Big Smile

    Re: Mac vs. PC (computers)

Now that Macs have the new Intel processors, it seems that program compatibility between macs and pcs is not a problem anymore.  However, I also wonder if the new processors have made macs less user-friendly and if the old fan statment of "they just work" still applies.  I would read as many reviews online as you can and also check consumer reports.  When I bought my mac, they were still number one on consumer reports' list for laptops.  I now mainly use my pc laptop because my mac simply can't run the business applications I need.  I must say, though, I LOVE my mac's ease of use.  It takes getting used to and that leaves a bad taste in many people's mouths, but once you figure it out, the OS is SO much easier to use than Windows.

My Macbook has intel dual core processors.

It just works :)  It's still completely user friendly.  That all comes from the operating system anyway.

Actually it's made it more customizable because you can now run Windows on Macs by just running the install disks. (so if you wanted to use a Mac to run all your business apps you can, just dual boot windows on an intel machine :) ).

I never had a problem with the hardware on my PCs (the intel chips, harddrives, etc) which is why I might consider Linux.  But when it comes down to operating systems and user interface Macs are leaps and bounds ahead of Windows.

Yeah, I would love to buy a new Mac, but can't afford it at the moment.  I bought mine about 6 months before they switched to the new processors. :(  So I still have one with compatibility issues.  I'm borrowing my dad's PC laptop for now while I"m in school.  I wasn't sure how mac's old processors compared with the new Intel processors as far as how much they can handle before they get choked up.  I'm a relatively new Mac fan, so I haven't had much experience with them yet and don't actively read up on this stuff.

    Re: Mac vs. PC (computers)

I have yet to manage to crash mine or lock up my processors, and I run some pretty hard core huge files and data crunching routines.  That includes remotely connecting to a Linux server via hacking my unix side and then running all sorts of nasty math ;)  So far it's taken everything I've thrown at it and come back for more.

It did run sluggish at times with large programs and graphics hogs (mainly photoshop), but then I upgraded my RAM.  Haven't see the spinny color wheel of doom (equivalent to the hour glass on windows) since.

Only issues have been case wear and some "first run off the line" quirks.  Neither of which affects performance, just gets slightly annoying at times (hence why it's going back in the next few weeks while I have a chance).

They are unfortunately expensive though :(  Really they aren't much more than an equivalent PC, but lack of a true midrange option is a bit painful.

    Re: Mac vs. PC (computers)

Up until last summer I'd never used a mac before in my life. For the Graphic Design program all we use are macbooks, so I got used to them real fast. They are easy to use and work great! I love them :) They have everything a PC has, only better. A couple of pros to a mac over a pc are 1. there are a TON less viruses out there for a mac, and 2. if you have technical difficulties, you only have to dial one number (apple [sorryQHAA, lol]), whereas with a pc, you might have to dial several to get the right person (manufacturer of the pc parts, windows, etc.). Bottom line: get a mac :) I plan to get one to work on once I graduate and can afford it :P

I think you mean Apple not Microsoft.  I shudder to think of my baby being associated with that evil empire! ;)

I have both, a PC with xp (vista was annoying - couldnt even plug in a usb key without having to 'install drives'), and a Macbook Pro with OSX on it - at first i didnt like it, but once I figured everything out, It is soo much better. Everything works, no problems.  Paralells is great - for those odd programs you cant run on OSX.  Go for the mac, not only are they easier to use with less problems, but they are also much sleeker looking.

    Re: Mac vs. PC (computers)

Well I don't have any mac experience but I just a got a new dell with Vista on it. and I have to say I'm not impressed. Not because the system is hard to use it's reallly just the about the same as XP but because somehow I don't have a lot of thigns like powerpoint that I did have on my XP one. I did just get it so it maybe moslty me jsut hating it while I figure out how to use it but despite supoosedly beign able to make videos on it ect. I find it's media programs fairly useless right now. I loved the Windows media player I had on my XP. It was simple basically copied and played muisic which is all I wanted. I'm also haveing trobule transferring files from my XP to Vista. I'll try to transfer music files so I don't have to recopy everythign and it will say file is "corrupt" maybe it's just because it's so different from windows(that's what they claim) but I'm not enjoying this particulary during finals. So read the reviews and decide what you think will work best for you but save backup files as well as a way to get to them if you get Vista.
