    Selecting a hunter bridle

    Hi,

I'm showing my 2 year old in hunter breed show classes this year, and did some research on higher-end hunter bridles (also some jumping/eventing bridles). I've summarized everything I learned in my blog at:

     http://behindthebit.blogspot.com/2008/05/choosing-show-bridle-for-hunter-ring.html

As I mention in my blog, I'm not a hunter fashion expert. I'd be intrested in what bridles others use.

By the way my favorite bridle was the USJA bridle available through Dover. Does anyone else have it?

Regarding showing your two year old, I think that is way too young. But since that is not the purpose of this thread, I'll say that I prefer to see simple but well-taken-care-of bridles with unpadded nose bands in the hunter ring. That is just my preference though. Also, you should use a simple snaffle bit. Depending on your horse's color, you can choose light leather or dark havana. You should have laced reins and a matching brow band. Although jeweled browbands are cute for schooling, you should use something more serious in the showring.

    Hi,

I agree that it is way too young to show under saddle--breed shows are in-hand only. It's actually a great experience for youngsters, it exposes them to a show atmosphere and asks only that they maintain good manners in the ring. He's a slow-growing baby and probably won't be backed until well into his third year.

I'm like you -- prefer the classic look.

Allright, in-hand is definitely okay. Since you didn't say what specific class you were doing, I took it as you were riding under saddle. :)

Wow... you compiled ALL of that info for your blog!?!?!? What a great resource!!! Im definately book-marking it.

I have very limited experience in the hunter ring (especially the rated shows)... but when we go to little schooling shows in my area, you see mostly dark browns, no matter the color of the horse. I think I remember seeing a flashy chestnut paint horse wearing the tan-ish newmarket color, but I thought it was even too light on him.

I am a rounded raised band kind of girl, and I do like the brible my trainer has for her horse... its deep dark brown, and the contrasting padding under the brow and nose bands is black. No fancy stiching on the either. I like them just plain Big Smile I don't know what brand it is, but I can find out.

I can't believe you won the Stubben bridle at Rolex.  I am SO jealous.  I wanted it!!!  I think it is a perfect bridle for the hunter ring - there is not one thing I would change about it.  In fact I never thought about a Stubben before but I would get one now.  Seeing the pictures of your horse I think it is a perfect fit.  You will absolutely look like you belong in the Dixon Oval.  Good Luck!
