    Shopping for a Horse!

I have found these three horses for sale and would like to know what you all think of them.

^ I have not yet herd from the owners of this guy.  He *is* out of my price range but they might be negotiatable?

^ the black TB gelding named Lucky.  Havn't heard from these people yet either.

and a vidio of him jumping

^ I really want to go see this guy, but I'll have to convince my mom that it's worth the 4 hour round trip.

    Thanks!

p.s. I'm sorry I couldn't get the links to work, but you might be able to copy and paste them?

    Re: Shopping for a Horse!

First one -- can't really tell anything from one headshot.  He sounds nice, but hard to say.  Also, I'm always annoyed when people only fill in a couple random horses on the pedigree when you know they have the full pedigree if they have his papers.  But that's just a pet peeve.

Second one is a very downill mover -- but that could be exacerbated by the fact that in every picture the girl riding him is leaning forward and staring down.  He looks very bored and his back end is always very strung out behind him.  I don't know what you want to do with this horse -- I wouldn't buy him for a dressage prospect, but he could make a trail/light pleasure/hunter if he can wake up under a good rider and start moving forward a lot more.

I like the third one best -- looks like he could be a decent mover with some energy to him.

     Thank you for posting!

I'll be really excited  if I can get my mom to drive me to see the third.  You are right about the energy.  The owner says he is very forward.  I just hope it's not to much energy for me to handle.  Silver has jumped to 2' 6 which I can't imagen wanting to jump higher than that anytime soon.   He does have a wire scar on one of his back legs, owner says he should pass a vet check though.  I hope I get to go look at him soon. =)

    Thanks!

I just got an e-mail, and the third horse (silver) has been sold.Crying

I do hope I will find my "perfect" horse soon.

Don't worry, there are literally millions of great horses out there for sale.  Try not to get too attached to any over the internet -- it's when you meet them in person that the magic really happens!

    I found this mare...

    http://www.equine.com/horses-for-sale/horse-ad-627646.aspx

She has schooled training level dressage.  Not trained to jump though.  Would it be impossible to safely teach her to jump myself?  I have trained a mini to jump, but that is probably a LOT different than a horse you are acctually going to ride.  I guess I might just have to be patiant and wait till something else comes up for sale.

P.S. Solaris, I think your horse is beautifull!

Aw, Solo says thanks!  He was an amazing backyard find!

If you are not experienced jumping horses, you will definitely want a trainer and a good school horse to help you.  You will not want to try an teach an inexperienced horse -- it will not end well.  I would be patient and keep looking -- finding a horse in their early teens who can do low level dressage and jump under 2'6" is not hard, just takes some patience and being realistic about your skill level so you can find the best match for you.

    Cross Country:

I do hope I will find my "perfect" horse soon.

Take it from someone who has owned a total of 14 horses over the years and worked at other barns as instructor/trainer before I bought the farm (so to speak), most horses don't start out "perfect".  They get that way over time and with a little give and take on both sides.  I would never have believed that the green-broke, 12 yo brood mare who flipped over the first time I put her on the longe would wind up being the best horse I've ever owned.  There was just something about her.  It's that "something" you're looking for.

The internet is a blessing and a curse.  It's far too easy to obsess on online "finds".  You need to be breathing air with the animal to get that sensation that THIS is truly a match you can live with an allow to grow.  The last two horses I bought I found on Dreamhorse.com, but I limited my search to a 50-mile radius so I could actually go see and ride the horses myself.  I looked at a BUNCH before I found my two, and it still took a year or more for each of them to show me exactly how special and "perfect" they were.  They still surprise me!
