    Critique on 'Upper Level Prospect'????

There is a 3yr old TB for sale that I am interested in. There are pros and cons with her and was hoping some one with more experience with assessing OTTB would put in there 2 cents. I am hoping she has potenial for prelim (+?).

I am an experienced rider, dealt with horses from all walks of life, so that isnt the problem. I just want to have a few more opinions on her before I go down and see her.

The faults that I dont like about her is:
    1. Her back looks a little weak but her back comes upwhen she is moving so not too worried about it.

    2. Her hind end looks a little odd (weak?) cant really put my finger on it, but I don't see it in the videos so I think it might be the angle of the photo.

    3. And she has the race horse canter (yes I know she should), but I rode a friends horse with a similar canter(I was planning on showing him the next day). Yes he was more down hill, but it was the MOST uncomfortable canter
I have ever ridden. It was like his whole body was moving in a jerking circle. And ever since, I have been paranoid about the canter.

I'm not good at critiquing, but her star looks like Ren's!

OK, let me start with I am not an eventer so I don't know what you would really be looking for in an event horse.  My opinion of this horse overall is that she is very pretty an obviously spirited.  Spirited can be good if you can channel it and not let her run away with you.  Her back is quite long.  And if you are seriously considering buying her make sure you have her thoroughly vet checked because she looks off in her hind legs to me when she is trotting.  Definitely is not an even rhythm in her hind feet in the trot.

     Holy long back, batman!

She is off on her left hind, I think.  I can't tell if it's in the foot or leg, but she appears as if she doesn't like to have it on the ground or bearing weight, even at the walk she favours it.

She has a nice stride (I just watched the walk mostly) with lots of reach -- it will be harder for her to get those hind legs up under her with that looooong back though.

I don't know, she has a potential for good movement and athleticism, but I am EXTREMELY wary of a horse that is shown on a sale video that is lame at the walk.

In my experince long backs arent the horrible confo fault it is said to be, as said by...

    bornfreenowexpensive on COTH:

I don't know why people are so hot about short backs. Most top jumper trainers and eventers will tell you that a slightly longer back is best for jumping and galloping. They have more scope and are better able to jump across big wide jumps. A shorter backed horse may be easier to balance and/or control but I've sat on many longer backed horses who could canter on a dime and had no issue shortening their stride. Basically, you don't want an extreme.

I agree she needs to step under more, but shes only 2 in the video and at 3 will even out a bit. I see the uneveness in the video as well, I am going to ask for a video of her trotting on hard ground and if they have any grass patched around, trotting her on that as well. The person I was email said the footing was very uneven (little red flag went up but I really like this mare).

Cute, but I'm worried about that left hind. She's off somewhere!

As for the long back, that's giving her the "weakness" you see across her loin.  As the person from COTH said, you don't want the extreme, but I think this filly is bordering on too long.  She also has quite a dip behind her withers for a three year old.

If you really like her and she's close, go take a look - there's no harm in that!

I would ask why she isn't racing anymore - just not fast enough?  Nine starts, no placing.  Let us know what you find!
