plz tell me what u think of Jazzy

This is my two year Jazzy.  i got her April 19th, she stayed at my boyfriends house so his dad could break her for me (would have done it myself but was recovering from knee surgery) She has now been at my house for a few weeks and i would love to know yallses opinions on her.  plz be honest and tell what u think a/b her (plz don't pay attention to me still getting over a bad knee injury)

to start out w/ this is her the first day we went and picked her up.  until this day she had never had grain in her life and hadn't been wormed or even fooled w/ by humans.

and her last week after being wormed twice and getting a scoop of 12% pellets twice a day and lots of handling

so far she is able to walk, trot, lope both to the left and right on the correct lead, she flexes to both sides w/ a very slight tug of the rein, is starting to spin (work in progress), and she will break at the pole as well.  she has a/b 45 days on her so far.  plz be honest she is super quick and is definately a mare lol.

Well, if you want honesty...Get off of her.  She is very young and small boned and being ridden by a full sized adult in a relatively small circle at the canter will not do her any good.  At this point, she knows the basics, far more than she even needs to know at this point and deserves a chance to finish developing before any further damage is done to her soft joints and bones.  Let her wait at least until she is 3 -- you can't undo damage already done, but you can prevent further damage.

I agree with Solaris, she needs time to develop and grow. Thats why horses break down at the racetrack, they havent developed yet.  I would do basic ground schooling with her now and wait to back her until later. Depending on the horse I would wait to 3-4.  Dont stop the ground work though!! Thats super important and easy to do and wont break down the horse. She looks cute, good luck with her.

You need to shorten your flank cinch up.  If she were to kick at a fly on her belly she could very easily get a foot through it.  It should be snug against the belly when not mounted so that when you do get on the saddle it doesn't drop much.

I agree that she should not be ridden till she's at least 3.  She still looks like a baby.   She needs to finish growing.  As for conformational critques, it's hard to tell anything because of the angles of the shots.

jazzy is a b/w 2 and three and she is 13.5 hands.  i have loped her like twice but most of the time i just walk, trot, and flex her.  she doesn't show any signs of me riding her bothering her. she is very ready and willing to be ridden and never acts as though i am hurting her.  i do lots and lots of ground work w/ her and i don't ride her every day just probably every 3 or 4 days. the two times that i have loped her it has been one time around and then i usually flex her and then call it a day.  i am taking thing very slow w/ her and i am not overworking her.  the vet said it was fine to start riding her after he came and checked her out when i got her.

    thanks for the suggestions

hmmm....well she's your horse but you notice that when you pick something really heavy up  in the wrong postion it doesn't hurt right away, maybe the next day or just doing this over a long time will RUIN your back. Riding her this early when she is this small could hurt her down the line. If you want your cute lil girl to have a nice long happy comfortable life you shouldn't ride her while she is so small. I have a yearling that looks about that same size. I expect sway back, and arthritis later in her life if you continue riding her now.

yeah she is cute.  I also worry about her petite size - for a 2 yr old.  I think I would take things very moderately till she was a bit bigger.

She looks VERY young... she looks younger than my 2 y/o. I'm not saying I doubt her age at all, but I'm saying she looks young for her age... no way would I be riding her for the next year or two! JMO.... I have a 3 y/o who has yet to have even a saddle on her! (the girl in my siggy)

the injuries to a horse this young can be cumulative and for life.  My advice would be to let her stop growing and then go back to working her.   She is very cute but is obviously young and still seriously growing.

Re: plz tell me what u think of Jazzy

OK, the first and second pic. you have of her show us that she is slightly taller in the rear and shorter in the front. That is a sign that she is still growing. If she is an appy/QH cross there is a good chance that she is going to end up around 15h tall. That means she has a good 4 to 6 inches to grow. If that is true and she isn't a POA, then you need to understand that her joints and bones are not ready for the stresses of training and riding. I realize that you have purchased her, and are hoping to have a nice ridable horse. But the facts are what they are, and that is that she is not yet developed enough to be ridden. You really should wait. You are going to break her down if you don't. Even her neck and head look like that of a very young horse. Give her a chance to be the best horse she can be. You will be glad you did, and you will have a good solid horse.

She has never had grain until you got her then she is way underdeveloped!

She looks young rather then stunted. This means she has lots and lots of growing to do. She will grow until 5 or later. My 12 year old daughter is mature enough to wait until next fall or later when her colt will be 3 1/2 before she even sits on him and she is less then 100 pounds.

As far as conformation on you filly. She is really small boned and small hooves. This will predispose her to navicular. She lacks muscle tone anywhere, she looks like she was not out running with others her age.

How sure are you of her age if she had no human contact before you got her?

She looks balanced and will be a decent mare when she grows up.

Re: plz tell me what u think of Jazzy

everyone has definately given me a lot to think a/b.  i definately don't want to ruin her future b/c she possesses so much potentional and i would hate for something to happen to her before she even got started good.  both her sire and dam are around fifteen hands and she is a qh/app cross.  i know she is at least 2 b/c of her papers.  one of the ppls relatives owned the horses but he died suddenly and the family was left to care for the horses.  Jazzy was a gift b/c my paintaloosa lost her baby a couple of moths ago.  i have a horse to ride but every down here says thats it's ok to ride her now.  the vet even checked her and said she was fine to ride but like i said earelier yall have def given me a lot to think a/b.  thanks for all yallses opinions and concern i will take them into concideration.

Good for you. It is a good sign when you can admit to possibly being wrong. Really think about it before you go on. This next year will give you a chance to bond with her and when you do ride, she will be a loyal friend.

Re: plz tell me what u think of Jazzy

Yay, I am glad that you are taking all this under consideration and I know that you will be really glad you did!  We all want to see you have a wonderful life with your new filly and know that you mean well trying to get her trained.   Give her a year or so to grow and then enjoy the next twenty or thirty years of fun that she will then be able to give to you without breaking down from premature joint degeneration and damage.  I've learned so much from this board and I'm so excited when I see others getting a chance to use the excellent knowledge bank here as well.  Smile

I don't think that you should be on her, and she is soo soo small, and I think that she is al little down hill. If she wasn't fed before you got her, you should really stay off her. She is cute, but a little small and downhill.
