my horse suffering choke NOW(6-26-08 2:39 US MNT time)

My poor baby!!!! She was choking yesterday for several hours before the vet could come (around 8:30 pm) finally the vet arrived and push out the blockage at 10 pm. This mornig there was saliva all around the floor of her stall and she was coughing up a lot of clear and foamy stuff. Now its 2:39pm and we called the vet and hour ago but she cant get here for at least and hour; my poor baby hasn't eaten or drank since at least 6 am. And worse yet shes been coughing up that same goo the whole time. Everytime she puts her head down it all rushes out her nose and mouth. What I need to know is does this sound like it could be life threatening? Is there anything I can do to help?

P.S. ill attach a pic of her simptoms

I hate to be alarmist, but yes choke is life threatening.

With all that stuff in her airway she can't breathe properly and there is the potential that there is something large enough (or enough small stuff) to case a complete blockage.

Also she's not eating or drinking which means she's dehydrated among other things which puts her at risk for secondary problems.  I'd also be concerned about her getting shocky at this point.

Call another vet (I always had a list of 3, but I guess I was lucky enough to live in an area where that was possible), or at the very least get your vet out there as soon as s/he and make sure s/he understands that you feel this is an emergency and your horse is still actively choking.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you; I've, thankfully, never had a horse choke that badly.  I hope you can get a vet out to help you and she's feeling better soon!

Thanks for the advice! Luckily our vet arrived just a few minutes ago. It turns out the vet that was here last night didn't get her un-clogged! GRRR!!!! Anyway our vet had to run the tube down her quite a few times. She tried water and the lube and the lube did it!

Right now it's hard to tell how she is truly doing because she is still sadated but I will give a stat report in half and hour.

In the mean time she was just given a shot of Banamine and we are giving her bute for a few days. The poor old (old as in 22) girl will be on antibiotics just incase some of the gunk got into her lungs to stop phnemonia (<if thats how you spell it)

Now I can finally stop worrying about her go to Heaven. Angel

Phew!  My horse is fine now! What a relief! She is very tired from her almost 24 hours of choking but she is eating and no longer coughing. Her nasal drainage is also gone, Praise the Lord

Wow, that must have been scary. I had one choke before on his feed and started pawing the ground, acting like it was colic....then the bulging eyes began and he kept gagging...I ran a hose up his throat and kept flushing for what seemed forever..my husband said about 15 minutes. You could see the bolus in his throatlatch area, and I kept massaging it. It was about 40degrees outside and the horse and I both ended up soaking wet, but he spat up the wad, swallowed some of it and suddenly was fine. Went back to eating hay like nothing had happened, leaving me with soggy, cold feet and a big sigh of relief! Tongue Tied  glad the second vet trip took care of it for your gal!!!

Hey Boo, remember Cheno's mild choking when you boarded here? Haven't seen any since that round. TG

Yup, I remember. You getting soaked to the armpits with a cold water hose trying to flush the junk out of his mouth and it was nice a chilly outside. Why did our boys only choke when it was cold? LOL Couldn't they at least be nice enough to do it on a hot day when the water would feel good? Selfish jerks! Confused   Wink

I have owned horses for almost 40 years. Our gelding choked bad last year. Very upsetting. Like your mare he needed repeated work from the vet.

My guy was sore for over a week. Sure hope your mare recovers fast and never has a repeat.
