    Boots and Coughing

    Hi all,

I have just gotten a new horse (wahoo), and he brushes when I ride him. He has tendon and fetlock boots given to me by his previous owner but he stil brushes which makes me think I'm not putting them on correctly;. I was wondering if someone could explain exactly how they should be positioned?

My other quiry is that he coughs a lot when I ride him.  He has a clean vet cert but is very unfit as he hasn't been ridden in ages. I was wondering if this would be why he was coughing or if anyone would have any other reasons why he would be coughing when ridden. He's out in a field and isn't being supplemented with any other food.

Any comments, theories or advice would be appreciated Smile

The boots won't prevent the brushing, just help prevent him from hurting himself when he does it by protecting the areas he's likely to hit.

Some horses will always brush, but it's worth talking to your farrier about it.  Sometimes trims can be tweeked to make them track better and prevent them from hitting themselves if the farrier is aware of the problem.

Is your area or the area you ride him particularly dusty?  That could cause the coughing problem.  I wouldn't worry too much about one or two coughs during warmup, but it shouldn't persist for the entire ride, out of shape or not.

Thanks very much for your reply, I think I will talk to my farrier about it - The last two ponies that I had didn't need boots so I just assumed I was putting them on wrong. The area I ride isn't dusty at all - I think I will have to wait and see how the coughing goes and if it persists then I'll definately get onto my vet about it.

    Thanks a million,

    Claire
