    New Riding Photos to Critique!

Yesterday was my 18th birthday and later that day we went to a friends house/farm. And she let me ride one of her horses, Flash, who is an Arabian. I'm not sure how old he his, though. I know there are a couple of things wrong with my position; shoulders need to be back, head up, legs more underneath me, and I need to reposition my stirrups across the ball of my boots. I haven't ridden in forever so I'm kind of out of position and shape but if you could critique me anyways!! Thanks!

    Flash is cute, happy bday!

Well, you already said most of it -- I would add that you need to turn your thumbs up to say goodbye to piano hands.  Also, Flash's saddle is sitting on top of his shoulder and needs to be moved back, which may be part of the reason your legs are out in front of you as the saddle is tilted down in the back.

Hhmmm, thanks! I didn't realize that the saddle was so far up his shoulder. And that makes sense as to why my legs were farther forward.

    Happy Birthday!!

I think that the saddle is too far foward, so your leg is out in front, but you need to ride off the inside of your calf, not her outside. Other wise, you look good.

Here are the things I noticed right away.

    1. Your legs are too far forward. Ideally they should be "at the girth," which is really around four inches behind. Your weight should be dropped into your heels, with like you said, the balls of your feet placed evenly in your irons.

    2. You have "piano hands." You need to turn your thumbs up. Your wrist position should be tight, not floppy or lazy. Keep a straight line from your elbows-wrists-to your horse's mouth.

    3. Also, make sure to keep your eyes up, chest lifted, and shoulders back.

    Not bad! :]

seems to me that your legs are too far forward because you are pushing into your stirrups to 'force' your heel down.

Don't worry so much about heels down, rather you need to let the weight of the leg drop into the heel with the stirrup under the ball of the foot - this should cause the heel to naturally drop slightly below the toe. As soon as you start to push the heel down, you will find that this causes tension and the leg to come forward.

you need to free up through your hip and thigh area, most likely if you haven't ridden for a while you will have stiffened up here. Some work without stirrups will help to loosen these muscles up. However, you do look nice and soft through your lower back which is a great basis for correcting the lower leg position.

Fun fizzy little horse you are riding though - looks as if you had a good afternoon :)

pic 1:  nice looking horse!  Thumbs up, look up and roll your shoulders back. think tall, and really turn your forarm so that thumbs are on top, pretend your hand is a house with the thumb as the roof

pic 2:  your feet, hands and back are braced.  this caused his head to come up and he isn't rounding and using his back.  relax and breathe, don't hold it in!  we all do. sing!!  soften and give with your hands, thumbs up!  shorten your reins and put your hands forward, you went to check your horse and your elbows are too far back.  really watch your feet, that tenses your back and since our mounts are mirror images of us, his back tensed as well.  ride without stirrups for awhile

pic 3: very sweet!  thumbs up, and keep your hands even, don't turn with your hand out to the side etc. look up

pic 4:  look up, and roll your shoulders up and back. try to touch your shoulder blades together. bend your elbows, forarm and thumbs to the sun! also watch that you are closing yoru fingers on the reins, I noticed that in a few pics.

overall: you have a good leg and heel, but are overexagerating a bit.  relax your leg and put it under you.  keep it up!
