    Meet Montani

I just bought this mare as a pleasure/jumping prospect and broodmare. This is a recent pic. She's in a midly odd position, but I'll have to wait until later this week to take new pictures. She's quite a girl! I'll also post a picture of a foal she's had.

16.2 hh, though the picture downplays her height. She won over $121,000 on the track in her younger years

    Re: Meet Montani

As a pleasure prospect, I like her.  As a jumping prospect......her topline looks very long and weak and downhill and her back legs are straight in that picture.  I wouldn't worry about low levels, but she's going to need some muscle to compensate for her lack of angles to provide the rock back and push power.

As a broodmare, no -- looks like she passed those post legs right on to her foal.  She's cute, but not a quality that there needs to be more of -- there are plenty of TB's out there that need places, no sense in making more unless they are absolutely stellar.

Overall, I like her and sounds like she will be a good project.  But I wouldn't breed her.

Her build reminds me a little of Rizzie's... and Rizzie is perfect.  LOL just kidding.  But Solaris is right about the straight hind legs.  However, since she is 20 years old, I don't see her being able to do much above lower level jumping anyway.  She looks good for 20!  I absolutely love the energetic look about her.

I have trouble still with critiqueing shoulders, but her's looks to be pretty nice.   She looks like she might have a nice freedom in her shoulder.  I could be totally wrong though, I'm still getting the hang of shoulders lol.  Her neck seems to be set a little high, so don't be surprised if she has a naturally high head carriage.

Her topline needs a lot of work.  But its not completely terrible for being 20 and an ex racer.  She has very little butt muscle (I sympathize, Rizzie has so little butt muscle that her butt looks sunken in.... ahh the effects of motherhood).  But I like her legs.  They look sturdy for her body size.

I also say no to breeding her for the same reasons as Solaris.

She has the energy of a 4 year old. But that may have something to do with her lack of handling before I got her. She's produced some outstanding track babies, but I don't want racehorses!! We have enough of those coming OFF the track to compensate for Montani not breeding. I took a look at the stallion she was bred to, and they had the same build except that the stud had a bit shorter topline. It's entirely possible that the stud could have contributed to the legs ;). I'm not ready for a foal, though, and will be just fine with her not breeding. I'm aware of the horse market and how low it is, so maybe I'll just buy an eventing prospect instead of breeding and contribute to building the market back up! lol

     Thanks to you both!

I think that sounds like a great idea!  She has a super cute face and I'm sure she'll be nice to work with as she progresses in her training.  But you are wise in thinking that you'll be better off buying a nice prospect on the ground so you know 100% what you are getting in terms of health and conformation.  :-)
