How do I get my horse to GO!

Hey! I own an 8-year-old Paint gelding named Scout.  Scout is a great horse--he rarely bucks, "moves" when you ask him, and even stands to be washed.  There's just one problem; whenever I go to a gaming show, I can't get him to GO!  He does the pattern and everything but we'll never place (1-6 place) because he doesn't go fast enough.

We've started to get him to move faster by doing the Pat Parelli thing--ask him to "Walk" vocally, give leg, and if he doesn't move then we slap his but with a bat (a short leather western whip).  Although he moves he still is pretty slow.  Any advice?  Is he just a slow mover or what?

Most of my life I've ridden horses--the rest I've just wasted.

The winds of heaven are that which blow between the ears of a horse.

It's a lot like nuts and bolts: the riders' nuts and the horse bolts!
