How to report performance issues and critical errors

Just a heads up to let you know that we had some network issues which were causing slowness in the forums.

Those have been resolved, but should you continue to have problems, please let us know by responding to this thread.

We'll be keeping an eye on things to make sure they run smoothly, but if you discover a problem, please let us know because we may not be seeing the same thing, as has happened in the past.

    Thanks.

Thanks, Jayne!  Seems better already and no more "oops" message.

Thanks for reviving this thread, Jayne.

The pages are loading faster and smoother today. But there still seems to be a minor problem or two I only see with my IE7 browser. The Site Search box is not in the masthead where it belongs. It is almost super-imposed over the top of the Community Search box below and to the right of it, rendering both unusable. I also get an occasional IE7 script error warning while changing ES pages. The warning appears to be related to either a pop-up or re-direct script.

So far, ES looks and works fine in my Firefox browser, WITH ONE EXCEPTION! Spellcheck is absent from the Reply Post options. Only the html icon is there. No checkmark icon for spellcheck. Spellcheck IS alive and well in IE7 though. ~FH

Is it still giving you the same errors, FH?

I'm not seeing it myself, but I'm on a Mac, using Safari.

I'm getting the Oops error again, either when replying to  a message and now even when clicking to read a forum or thread.

I've reported this and the tech guys are looking into it.

Hi Jayne, I tried to use the "report abuse" link at the bottom of a post last night.  After typing my message, I got a "forum not found" error.  Not as helpful as it could be Wink

I'll have them look into that.  We had checked that just a couple of weeks ago.

What it's supposed to do is copy the offending post into a moderators only "reporting" forum.  It worked fine when Kate tested it, but perhaps there's a hiccup when a non-moderator tries to use it, because the destination folder is moderator only.

     Thanks for bringing it up.

Last I heard (early afternoon-ish) the data center were having a look into the server issues.  Apparently it's not holding the settings that prevent the oops errors.  Since that's the server chat is on, they had to disable chat until they can get it stabilized properly.

He said he'd let me know when they were done, but I haven't heard back from them today. On the plus side, I'm not having any problems in the forum this evening.

I'll send him an email about chat.

Re: How to report performance issues and critical errors

Hi everyone, apologies for chat being down.

The server it is running on is having intermitant problems accessing the network correctly, which in turn causes the forums to slow down dramatically (the server is looking for a network file and has to time out before it can respond to any request). So, we took the server off-line in order to trouble shoot and repair. This, of course, took chat down.

After much troubleshooting (~5hrs of a network consultant) it turns out that the network interface card on the server appears to be failing. We’ve tried everything software related (drivers, etc.), but to no avail. So we are replacing the network card and keeping our fingers crossed that that is the issue. If not, we have to rebuild the server. If it turns out we have to rebuild the server, we'llattempt to move the chat license to our other forum server prior to rebuilding. Either way, we should know more in a few hours and will let you know.

Thank you, Steve. Even if we don't have a clue about what you're saying, it's good to hear from someone charged with the responsibility of actually fixing such things. A timely heads-up that you're on the job will go a long way toward preventing some of us (me) from turning to sex, drugs and alcohol to fill the void caused by a dysfunctional ES forum and chat server. ~FH
