Annapolis has been on One AC for years. During the worst part of the summer, he still only sweat minimally, but at least he doesn't pant.

A fan in the stall during the day would certainly help. When Annapolis went up to Texas A & M to be diagnosed/treated for EPM, while he was there he was in an air-conditioned stall and when he came back, he was sweating normally.

He does have a regular fan in his stall, and an automatic waterer. My trainer hoses him a few times a day as well. Such a process! I'm having a chiropractor out tonight bc she swears she's had success with it.. but we'll see.

Hmmm... VERY intriguing! I'll put that on my list of the next thing to try.. I'm going to give the One AC a chance, and we'll see if it helps. Its funny.. I rode Bon VERY briefly last night, and despite the panting he's still very willing to work. Really strange.

Yes, I have to watch that with Annapolis too. He'll keep on going like there's nothing wrong. When you stop, you realize the whole body is rocking with the panting. Scary.

First time I noticed it with Annapolis (over a decade ago), we were beside a creek, I took his saddle off and he immediately lay down and rolled in the water.

I am sorry to hear of the problem you are having with Bonfire. What did the previous owners do for him? How hot is it getting in your area? I don't have any helpful input to give except that maybe he might have to come and live with me. (Wishful thinking on my part.) I sure hope you can come up with something that works for him.

Thats exactly what happens... I rode him last week and we were just going along.. I reached down to pet him and his neck was so hot to the touch I jerked away.. Frown. Poor guy. Do you just keep Annapolis on One Ac all year, and do you have him on anything else? The chiro actually seemed to help.. Bon still pants but its less "intense" .. he doesnt seem to frantic about it.

Re: Bon is STILL not sweating

I have Annapolis on One AC from about March through October. Heck, I may as well keep him on it year round!

I rode him yesterday, about 6pm and just walked around the arena with one of the other boarders. Their horse was sweating (admittedly he was jogging in annoyance at being kept walking) and Annapolis was bone dry.

When I took his saddle off, he had sweated under his saddle, but that was it. He was panting mildly after about 30 minutes of walking around the arena. I didn't trot or anything because the temp was still around 96/97 degrees.

Hopefully, when I move him next week, he'll enjoy our trailrides in the shady woods, instead of the hot and dusty arena.

I've been thinking about that comment and the only thing that comes to mind is the BO's horse. He did that for only one day and it was assumed the horse had heat exhaustion. It was in the 100's and the dew point was in the tropical range (high 70's). When the weather got that hot the horses were taken out in the am, brought in around noon and taken back out after about 7pm, then brought in at 9pm. No one at our barn rode during that heat wave unless it was early in the am (4 - 6) or in the late pm (8 - 9). It seems like it is too much for Bonfire to be ridden at all when he is that hot.

Oh, we're not riding him at all. I rode him once last week around 8pm for about 15 minutes, and that was the only time he's been ridden in about a month or so. I'm hoping to keep him on One AC over the winter and keep my fingers crossed that he will sweat next summer.

Have you tried upping his dose of One AC? When I started Annapolis on it, Mr LeRoy, who developed the stuff, told me I could experiment until I found a dose that worked. He also said that I'd probably need to increase the dose as time wore on.

Annapolis is on a two-scoop dose (the basic maintenance dose is a one-scoop). It keeps him comfortable enough for hanging out in the pasture. If he was still panting out in the pasture, I'd up it to three scoops.

Re: Bon is STILL not sweating

Really? Thats what I was wondering.. the company never responded to my email about possibly upping the dosage. Bon is on one scoop of One AC both AM&PM.. Maybe I should try upping him to two scoops both AM&PM? Thats worth a try.

Yes, give it a try. It might make all the difference in the world.

Ok, we'll try it! Fingers crossed.

PS.. After I had the chiro out last week to adjust him and do cold laser therapy on him, he did seem more comfortable. Still panting, but less labored and frantic. Might help Annapolis. Smile
