plants that aid in insect control

I remember once reading that you could plant along your fence lines various plants that aided in bug control. Even if it only helps a little I would like to do this next spring.

I heard that Lavender works. I know there are many different types of lavender so I don't know which one. I remember reading that marigolds are good but don't know which type of marigold to buy. There are the little close to the ground French Marigold and then there is another species whose name escapes me that is very tall.

I live near Seattle so whatever it is must not require a very hot climate.

Does anyone have any experience doing this? However it works out my marigolds and lavender will make the place smell nice and be pretty. I know both are non toxic to horses

In getting ready to own horses again, I've done some research. Since every area is different, I would contact your local co-op extention office to see what they suggest for your area. Meaning what is good to have in the South, may not be true for the North due to temps or soil, etc. Also they can tell you what could be poisonous to horses.

I found these during my research and think they have some good info.

Before I plant anything that I am not sure of I contact my local Veternary College to see if it poisonous. I have been using beneficial insects for 15 years. I have been a horse owner for 39 years so I am pretty much aware of the needs of my animals. I have also been a gardener for 30 years so I have some idea about soils.

What I am hoping is that someone can tell me. If they planted anything that helped. I also have stated that I live in the Pacific Northwest and therefore live in a temperate rain forest.

So with the focus of everything on being green I am hoping that someone has some sort of experience with planting to augment my current insect control program. There was an article in a horse magazine that I read a couple of years ago. I can't remember which magazine or when it was printed or I would ask for a reprint.

I am beginning to think from the complete lack of responses from people who have done this that it isn't that useful of an activity.

Don't give up yet!  I live on an island in the tropics, so my advice isn't completly applicable for your temperate rainforest... or maybe it is.  We have neems trees (many non-deet bug products list neem oil) that work really well.  I can tell you from first hand experience the mosquitos stay away from them.

Perhaps others can better help you- best of luck!  I do all I can to minimize pesticide use, it's a good thing for them and for their envirmonment.

Make sure it is native!  We don't need any more exotic invasives anywhere in the world.  At least around here, our ag services folks are NOT up to speed on what is native vs. invasive, so always check on that.

I don't want anything that spreads anyway.

I have done some research and lavender which is never invasive is one plant I am going to use. The other is french marigolds. They don't spread either. I may add some lemon balm to my backyard and some basil but that seems to be the list for my area so far.

I have artemisia polaned for mosquito control  around my house.  It works if is not too windy or is sheltered from the wind.
