Some Horses Have the Worst Manners...
I was looking forward to a nice, relaxing ride on Lily today since it's been awhile. The pasture was horribly muddy, so it took me forever to get to Lily. On my way over, Libby, one of the boarders' horses pinned her ears at me and tried to get in my space (this is a recurring issue, she does this to everyone who comes to get another horse out). I did what I always do, gave her a growl, squared my shoulders, and flicked the lead line at her. It worked, as it always does, and she trotted off.
Lily was in one of the paddocks that is left open to the big pasture since it has a run-in. As I was about to walk into the paddock to get her, Libby came back, trotted up to Lily, gave a squeal and pinned her ears and backed Lily into a corner, at which point she let out two huge bucks, hitting Lily in the chest and in the side right where the girth goes.
I was surprised Lily didn't fight back right there - she's usually higher in the herd - but she pinned her ears and trotted over to where I was standing about twenty feet away and put her head by me. I took her out of the pasture to check her over in case Libby got any other ideas... no open wounds, but they were ouchy right then. I decided to just keep her in her stall for the night so Corey can check on her during his late rounds and make sure she's feeling okay. But my ride went down the drain and there wasn't much we could do since there was a lesson in the indoor and everywhere outside was a big mud puddle.
I think it's interesting how Lily reacted. She is such a sensible, sane horse, especially for her age. I was proud of her today and just had to share. It's still so hard to watch your horse in that situation, no matter how often you see it happen. My heart caught in my throat when I saw the hooves connect... just glad she was okay.

Re: Some Horses Have the Worst Manners...
Glad Lily is okay. Malibu is in a pen with a QH mare who is a PITA. Malibu has been the Alpha horse in her pen for quite awhile. She was in a pen with two 12h ponies. She wasn't mean to them, but she got to choose her hay first and they respected her. She was great for the kids who went in to get the ponies. She would walk up to say hello and then she would stay out of the way. Well one pony was moved and in came the QH. The first day they were put together those two went butt to butt and kicked the snot out of each other. I got to the barn and Malibu had a HUGE gash under her tail. I cleaned it real well and put a call into the vet. The next day it was scabbed over and she could care less about it. She was ready to ride. The day after it was completly healed.Gotta love the pony breed in her.Now those two horses are the best of friends. It took Malibu a while to realise she was no longer Alpha, but she has finally given in. The QH mare is hard to catch, cranky, and a pill to ride. It didn't take her long to realise she wasn't allowed by the gate when I come in and she better not try and boss Malibu outta the way when im leading her to the gate. You can really tell when some horses have had a good start and others haven't had very plesant experiences. Sometimes I can't believe Malibu is 3. She acts more like she is 10. Young horses are so much fun. Im sure your having a blast working with Lily.

Yes I'm glad to hear Lily is ok also! It sounds to me that Lily made her point to Libby and was more concerned for your safety by coming over to you. :) What a great Mustang she is and you're very lucky to have her and visa versa!

Ugh yes, that is so annoying. There is a horse at my barn (actually two horses... mother and daughter) who will charge and kick at people. I think this should be completely unacceptable, but there's not much I can do about it. Thing is, once Rizzie is moved into a stall she will be living with this horse. I just hope she doesn't pick up any bad habits from her. :(
Good for Lily for being so good! I always wonder how other people can have mares that are just so naturally sane when I have to work so hard to keep mine at a decent level... lol.

That makes me mad! Now I want to go get that bratty horse Honestly though she cant be much worse than Cresent was. And Lily can really whoop another horse when she wants to, I've seen it. She is just too sweet

Amber, I've seen it too! Haha, much bigger horses than Lily have backed away from her. Like all the geldings in her pasture. I really think she didn't react more because I was there. She is one awesome horse.
VM, I do love working with a young horse, too! Green has such a stigma to it, but the good part is that there aren't really any bad habits/mishandling to untrain. (But as my trainer says, if something is wrong, you know it's your own fault!)

And that really teaches you alot about yourself doesn't it? That is one reason I love working with the mustangs so much. Just when you think you are teaching them then you realize they are really teaching you.

Why do I have to live in a tiny little apartment? I have a feeling the BLM wouldn't see my balcony as an appropriate place to house a wild mustang.

Oh, why not, sounds perfect to me!? lol Lily sounds lke such a good girl! I keep myself in the dark on purpose about when the mustang auctions are around here, I couldn't stand going, and I would get everything I came across. My farrier has been to a few, and he is always very careful to not say a word to me about them till they are over, bc he knows me well enough to know he would have to trailer home a bunch of mustangs for me.... I love working with Ta'c. Jake (mentioned farrier) made the comment to me one day about what I would do with a horse/critter that wasn't abused, and I laughed. I know if ta'c ends up messed up it is my own fault (he went through some near abuse stuff before I got him, but since I got him at just over 4 months (2 young I know but it was me or a person that should be shot....) he doesn't seem to remeber it much.) Young horses are just awesome!

Ahem, don't forget I live in the middle of Chicago! I don't even HAVE a balcony, unless you count the rooftop that's a common area and 40 stories up - silly, that's what boarding barns are for. ;)

I guess I'm going to have to buy a ranch sometime soon!

Re: Some Horses Have the Worst Manners...
Oh trust me, between the humane societies here, and the BLM weanling adoption that is going to happen soon, I'm having to use all of my reasoning as to why I can't afford a horse right now. Maybe in a few months though........ Trust me, you guys will be the first to know!

I'm glad Lily is okay. Kind of sweet the way she looked to you for comfort after the mean horsey beat her up. She's really bonded to you.
