About the traumatized DHs. Mine broke his little finger three weeks ago while holding a lead rope for me. The horse pulled back and must have pivoted the finger. He said it hurt and showed it to me. I'm looking for a rope burn and not seeing anything. I was thinking, "well, if he says it hurts I'll be sympathetic". Later, he said he thought it was broken and had it x-rayed the next day. He got the cast off yesterday. I guess I won't ask him for help for awhile.

What I don't understand is, why aren't these guys into horses???  It's great that they tolerate/support their spouses'/girlfriends'/whomever's passion for them, but I don't get why They don't get/aren't into horses.

 Maybe it's just as well, eh??  <wink>

Hey folks!   My hubby claims that he is too old to be riding horses (65) as he could fall off or get thrown and that could hurt him for the rest of his life. This is a total change from before the trailer thing. My horse is for my enjoyment and all expenses are mine too. That's okey.I did ride yesterday and it went well but it's going to rain all day today so I doubt if riding is in the cards today. I was supposed to go out and help the BO with fence but will wait and see how the day turns out.  Have a great day, all.

Hi ladies!  Just wanted to share my DH experience...  He is not a rider, but supported my daughter and I through schooling shows and A shows, and then volunteered to help me put on a fun show, and finally volunteered to help put on a local A show.  He has used his business and organizing skills to help and it has been a lot of fun for the whole family.  So, even if they don't ride or want to handle horses there are other ways to get these guys involved.  Oh, and along the way he developed a very good eye for a horse!

I started out showing at schooling shows with my daughter at age 46, after having my horse about a year.  I thought I would never want to, because I'm not very competitive (or so I thought).  But it was so much fun, and so revealing about where I actually stood with my horse.  I take it as a test of my abilities and my relationship with my horse.  And believe me, I always find something to work on...  It does not have to be expensive, plain saddles are fine and a nice outfit can be put together very reasonably.  Most schooling shows are cheap and a great days fun.  So, just my 2 cents, but don't be afraid to go out there and try the local shows, I think you will love it!

AMEN to that.  So refreshing to see someone else express my attitude about shows.  Especially reading a lot of the horse magazines, you'd think that the show ring (or "show pen") is the be all and end all of horses and riding.  Whereas most of the people I've known in 54 years of riding and training consider it a side issue!  I love seeing younger people on other parts of the forum who are all about their relationship with their horses, and about improving their horsemanship and their horse's performance, not about appealing to the judges in a show!  We all know that's the basis of a life-long commitment.  Too bad the mag's don't write more to appeal to the non-show reader.  You don't have to be showing to be commited to improving!

Yeah, it's too bad for them that they're missing out.  On the other hand, for me it's a chance to have something serious that's just my own, and a chance to have some really close women friends and "girl time".  After lots of years of marriage I appreciate that a lot, too.

 

Count me in.  I will be 55 soon, started riding at 40.  I own two horses.  This morning will be taking my 8yr son to pony classe(with the other moms, I am the only guy.)  Had a few interesting accidents jumping with a young horse that used to trip a few years back.  I can feel EVERY broken bone now just before it rains...and it rains alot here...

I love watching the videos of folks riding in tshirts in Florida!  Anyway, when I don't ride I experience lower back pains.  Riding, English, seems to do wonders for the back...Hope someday soon to be able to hack out with my son on our Sunday Rides....rr

I was actually taught on English way back in my very young youth. I have been riding western since I got my present horse but was given a used English saddle to have fun with. I have tried it a couple of times and it scared me as my balance was off. I should try it again since it's better on the back. Thanks. PJ

I know where has many horse lovers over 40. I just now surfed on that site. I find many many horse lovers there, all kinds of age. The site is http://horsedate.com. That is a very good site for horse lovers to make friends or built new relationship. I am a horse lover. But unfortunately for a long time before I could not find a friends who has the same interests with me. I was so lonely that time. I always ride on my horse without any other partners. I do not remember how long has past but I know I will no longer be lonely any more, because I have found a very perfect site online where has thousands of horse lovers. Hope you can be as luck as me.

im not over 50, in fact im only 13, but im sure ill love horses 4-ever!!!  So don't worry, you couldn't be the only one, unless....

Shawn, reading your post about the broken finger brought to mind my "horse" injury concerning broken bones.  About 3 years ago I was holding my horse by the halter ( a mistake).  He spooked at some birds (!) and spooked into my hand.  I felt my ring finger flatten against his head.  There wasn't much pain although I did notice some swelling.   I even went on a short ride.  Later I realized that my finger was "really" swollen and my engagement ring and wedding ring had almost disappeared beneath the swelling.  But, I have a high tolerance for pain and thought it would "go away". My profession is typing x-ray reports in a hospital.  The next day I was at my desk typing away.  My boss saw my finger and freaked out.  I ended up having my rings cut off my hand, an x-ray done which realized a very serious break which went into the joint, a trip downstairs to the ER and an operation with 2 pins put into my finger.  Not to mention weeks of physical therapy.  And, of course, being told that I WILL end up with arthritis in that finger.  Thank you to an ER doc for that pearl of wisdom.!!

At 60, I guess counting that as my "worst" horse related injury is pretty good.  I have heard much worse "horror stories".

Well i guess i belong to this group being a tad bit past 50.and seeing i have a few 4 legged critters a moving about out in the pasture.

Well my name is Kathy and my other half is Carl and we live in West Texas and have Paints and Welsh ponys.i have started riding them as i can't get up on the larger horses anymore.The legs are getting shorter and the horses taller,i think.LOL

But we both enjoy trail riding and i would like to do a bit of competative trail riding now that i am retired due to health,heck 7 hear attacks can't keep this old hen down.LOL

We have 3 welsh mares,one Welsh/Tobaino stallion(well yearling) and a Paint horse that is Carls baby.I work the mares and he gets the boys.I am looking for a older small horse to ride on trailes when my knees and hips will not let me ride the young stock but i guess that will come in time.

I also have hypo condra dysplisia(a genitic Dwarfisim)I am 4ft 4 and getting shorter due to ostiproses and nothing can be done for it.my Dr get so upset when i ride but she is happy i have gone to pony's if she only knew they can buck and toss just as hard as a horse.But the ground is closer.LOL

Carl and I plan to move to the land where our ponys are adn i hope to be able to assist the Mounted texas Search and Rescue,i use to help with this group in tenn when i was younger,and if i can't ride i can make coffee and sandwitches and do what ever to help.I also am a member of the Welsh pony and Cob Society of America and the Competative trail riders,and The West texas Trail Riders.And the Boy Scouts of America,I am cherokee and Seneca,so i use my native background and teachings to teach native american lore to the scouts at camp when i can.As well as plant science as i was raised in 15 acres of greenhouses in tenn.

When i ride a large horse i have to stay on all day as my hips and knees lock up and getting off is painfull.So i stay on and eat and dring on the horse and at the end of the day,i ride up to the trailer and slide off onto the bumper and then to the ground and get my legs and hips working and then i go to the tolie.VBG,I have been doing this for over 8 years now but jiffy is gone and now i have a smaller mount that i can get off and on when i need to and it is a lot easer.Yeaaa.

Now i am just a retired house wife and pony loves.So if you want to chat please do so.Carl and I would love rriding and camping with any of you.We love horse camping and I have now got use of a 2 horse trailer,that a girl friend is letting em use for now.Untill i can save for a trailer.So we can go places and camp.As we can't afford expensive trips.We are just old fashioned country fold and Carl is a fantastic Dutch over cook.He does all the cooking when we go camping,so if you are in the area of we come there,give a hollar and we will ride together,that is if you do not care riding with a short lady on a pony.LO
