  • Re: What Do You Remember From Those '70s Shows?

I do! I had the buckstitched saddle/bridle, the Tom Thumb bit and striped saddle blanket. Pants were worn inside the boots. I looked like such a dork in those days, lol! The manes were shaved and quarter horse tails were to be just above the hock....short, like our stirrups! Long/low and slow was already starting to win in the pleasure classes. The days when you went to the show for the whole 5 days and slept in the stalls next door. The best time of all was when the show ended for the day, the public

  • Re: Merthiolate? Where?!

I googled it out of curiousity and didn't like the ride. My question(s) are: Merthiolate....why? Think (Mecurachrome) Anti-septic properties with Mercury in it. Lovely. Used as a precursor in 5-way vaccines for horses...hmmm. Used in children's vaccinations and is being phased out as well.(its being suspected as a possible cause of so many children suffering from ADD) Mercury is soooo poisonous and pervasive, accumulative and dangerous in minute amounts! Another question is why would your

  • Re: Need serious help

I also agree that bringing a lawyer into the picture would ruin your relationship with your family as you know it, forever more. Me? I'd suck it up and pay my Dad back, even if the "owing" came as a surprise at a later date. I wouldn't be paying him back because I owed him, but because I was grateful to him for making my dreams come true. I would be eternally grateful for making all of it wonderfully possible. Remember, you never would have had that horse if he hadn't stepped

  • Re: Bareback riding

What does it feel like to ride bareback? I'm instantly reminded of Alex jumping on the Black Stallion and tearing off down the beach for the ride of his life! LOL! I'll never forget it! It is an excellent exercise in improving your riding skills.

  • Re: What are the best type of ice wraps (affordable)?

For $20 I ordered Cold Flex from Long Riders Gear. Its a gel bandage that you simply wrap like you would a regular bandage and press it lightly to keep in place. It can go directly on the skin without burning. No refridgeration needed and reuseable. Good for a couple of hours.

  • Re: White line disease?

Whew! That's good to know! LOL! Chances are, though, if you are having problems with thrush, that the white line could be affected and would be good to revisit this with the farrier when the shoe is off. I'm not familiar with Thrush Buster, but it could be killing the surface of the sole with repeated use...hence a lot of sloughing that looks like grey matter that you can dig trenches in, or it could be just sloughing false sole from the shoe and wet weather. Either way, its food for the

  • Re: Choke - Purina Equine Senior

Did you know that a horse swallows about 16 quarts of saliva a day? With the easier eating senior foods, there is less chewing, hence less saliva, hence the higher risk for choke. The saliva has a bicarbonate that goes right down with the food to protect the stomach...less saliva, less protection against ulcers. Soaked beet pulp is an excellent addition to the hay. Couldn't be safer, either. Soaked alfalfa cubes is also a good idea, as mentioned.

  • Re: All the possible reasons for....

PAIN .... Where is P3 in BOTH feet? Are both well balanced? Good hoof conformation? Is the other hoof flared forward? Any white line problems? Any thrush problems? Can sore a hoof overnight. Metabolic problems? Mineral imbalances? CONDITIONING?...about to abscess? (at the bruising stage?) boots in the arena, Promenade Walks bare on asphalt for 30 min./day, pea gravel in the paddock. Arthritis? Can you post pics?

  • Re: White line disease?

The sole is what is white and chalky...exfoliating. The white line is under the rim of the shoe. If its in a trench-like state, it will be black. The shoe covers the white line and you shouldn't be able to get your hoof pick up under there. If you can and you see a black trench, then there is white line disease going on, is rotting away, not only where the nails are seated, (which explains why you might be able to get a hoofpick up under there...shoe letting go) but your hold of hoof to bone

  • Re: Getting your horse to come when you whistle?

You'd best have something in your hand that tastes better than the grass, LOL! Doesn't take a horse long to associate a whistle with a reward. Such children! I toss an apple in the air, so they can see I've got something. They come running, then I throw it 50' and make them chase it back the way they came! I'm mean! LOL! I think this originally happened to avoid milling/competition at the gate.
