I second the hosing off and electrolytes. Orange Gatorade also works well! If you don't have access to a hose on the trail carry a jug of water and a sponge in your saddle bag, then when he gets warm, you can just wet the sponge and sponge off his head/neck/chest area when you're on him. When you stop and take a break, take the saddle off and sponge where the saddle sits, and where the girth lies. Water proof bug-spray helps!
