"The Horsemasters", a Disney production with Annette Funicello. It's about a group of teenagers who belong to a riding academy; Annette is afraid to go over a particular jump, either she or the horse had been badly injured earlier at the same jump, don't remember which. Been years since I've seen it, but it's a goodie. "Hidalgo". enough said, The original "My Friend Flicka", and the sequel, "Thunderhead Son of Flicka". Didn't care for the

The current issue of "Horse and Rider" features a large ad-section from the AQHA concerning "safe trail riding" that is definitely sending a mixed message when it comes to safe trail riding. In the course of the article, it does mention that a rider who "chooses" to wear a helmet should look for one that is ASTM/SEI certified, and that's great, but in the photographs that accompany the article most of the riders are bare-headed, wearing baseball caps, or cowboy hats

You're not the only one who wants to cry. This girl has been not only neglected, but flat-out abused.

I'm glad your filly isn't afraid of dogs after that horrific experience...thanks for the update!

What a horrible experience for you, snewville, and your horses! I am so glad all of you survived! Thank you for sharing what happened, and the outcome. Are either the horse or filly scared of dogs after this? I would like to note that if anyone does decide to carry a gun for self-protection, be sure you know how to use it, and be sure to know how to use it around horses. In the excitement and commotion, it would be horrible to either shoot yourself, your horse(s) or any other person around. Also

I guess I'm kind of late to this thread, but I want to thank you, Florida Horseman, for these tips. I'm a beginning rider, and I will be working this summer (with the horse that I lease) on "respect" issues, and I know these tips will come in handy. Thank you again-and I do appreciate ALL your posts, on ANY topic!!!!!

I've had this same problem with the horse I lease. He's wonderful on the trail in a group, but gets "antsy" if it's just the two of us. What seems to have helped is to just take him out on the trail for a very short time and distance, and increase that time and distance a little bit each time we go out. Our first solo trip was only about 10 minutes long, and our next trip was slightly longer than that, ie., about 15 minutes, and then a bit longer, etc. After several trips following

I have never tried the Cotton Naturals, but I expect to give them a close look the next time I go to a Dover saddlery store (my local tack store doesn't carry them). In the Dover catalog, they do look like nice breeches, and I like that the prices of the Cotton Naturals seem reasonable. Having said that, I'm pleased with my Tuff Riders. I have several pairs, in various fabrics and styles, and they are all quite reliable breeches. I love their new knee patch pull-ons made from bamboo; the fabric
