I bought an 11 year old non-raced TB this summer. She was very fat and hot when I brought her home. After loosing some weight and lots of time just riding in the countryside she settled down. When I first started to jump her, she was very strong but quiet cross country our first time schooling. Quickly...

I trained my Quarter Horse mare to jump last year when she was two. She would jump anything. Now she's three and will jump almost anything. Everything except the straight pole jump. She thinks it's funny or something to go really fast and act like she's going to jump, then refuse. I know...

My horse, Power Ranger, is a 7yr old TB, with no background in dressage. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how we could make our canter more collected and balanced, to make hunter rounds a bit easier. He also has the habit of refusing jumps with flowers and other scary objects. He doesn't...

Last night at Power Ranger and I's lesson, another one of the riders at my stable hopped on Ranger to see if he could get him to canter completely around the (very large) arena. He was successful, and even tackled some of the jumps I wasn't able to get. He later explained that I ride too tensely...

I have successfully coached hunter \ jumper for 25 years. I have a new student who used to galloped racehorses. He now wants to rider hunter \ jumper and some eventing. However, the way he rides seems to cause his horse to ride behind the bit. His horse pulls down on the flat and now jumps ahead of its...

I was at a AA horseshow and I just finished my first class of the day. I was got off my horse to go look at the next course and I got off backwards (butt against the saddle). My stirrups caught on my pants and they ripped! I had to walk my course and ride in the next class with the two safety pins from...

Hi folks, My horse and I will be riding our first hunter pace in two weeks. I will be going out on my 11 year old Appendix Quarter Horse gelding who is good on the trails as well as a nice jumper in the ring during our lessons, and we will be with my husband, who is a solid rider and will be taking out...

You've gotten a lot of really great suggestions so far! My first recommendation would be to work without stirrups on the flat at all three gaits. When you can post (no, it won't be pretty) for a whole minute or so, you'll have tons of the right muscles and balance to help keep you secure...
